Marble
Marble and Chipper were both from the Allen Veterinary Hospital. Whereas Chip was the
first adoptee in his litter, Marble was the last from hers. She was a Husky/Collie cross,
selected and named by Matt. Marble became the enforcer to back up Chip's vocal adventures.
She was very quick, quite strong and pretty much fearless. Chipper would yap
and Marble would back him up with snarls. For all her intimidation
ability, Marble was the Mother to her cats as well as Chip and had a particular affection
for Mister.
At far too early an age, Marble began to lose the use of her rear legs due to a degenerative
nerve disease afflicting both Huskies and Collies. As the disease progressed she
would be seen to try to stand up , fail, and look at her hind legs as though to
ask what was happening. There was no pain associated with the disease itself and
a K9 cart allowed her to remain with us for
a couple of extra years, walking up to a mile a day using only her front legs.
A bad winter in 1992 though, kept us off the roads too much, accelerating her
overall deterioration, and Fred finally admitted his friend needed and
deserved release. Marble was laid to rest in June 1993 accompanied by many of
Fred's tears.
